Does that string of letters mean anything to you? Is it a sentence? Is it written in Standard English? If so, what does i1 mean? I have done mathematics for a very long time, but this is a meaningless string of letters as far as I can see.
Instead of arguing over whether or not the poster is writing in "Standard English" or not, ...
I beg to differ. I think poster should read his/her posts for clarity - before we are sent on wild goose chase.
When these guys are let loose into the real world - then we would say "we don't understand whatever you are saying". It is better that we insist on "clarity of statement" now - than complain later.
I really doubt that a poster in "basic Math" forum would deal with "i" as in imaginary number.
I am NOT suggesting that you are sending us on a wild-goose-chase. I am just suggesting that the students are careless in posting problems - and we are sent on a wild-goose chase while guessing about the correct problem-statement.
I am not suggesting that students are not careless but you must admit that typing math into a forum is not the easiest thing to do (even for people that are fairly mature in math). Have you ever had any trouble at all typing something into this forum (or any other computer application)? Think of how it is for beginning students or people that have difficulty with math (I have heard the term "math illiterate tossed around once in a while as related to to just plain "illiterate"). Illiteracy is a very real thing.
