Here is the question from the sample problem I was given.
The total imports of petroleum (in millions of barrels per day) in a given year is approximated by the polynomial
30x-527x+2082x+6055, where x represents the number of years since 1975. The corresponding total of exports of petroleum is -x+14x+23x+189. Write a polynomial that represents how many more barrels per day were imported than exported in a given year.

To find the polynomial representing how many more barrels per day were imported than exported in a given year, subtract the polynomial representing exports from the polynomial representing imports.

Write the subtraction statement.

Change to polynomial being subtracted.

*This is where I get lost, I don't understand what, 'Add the terms of degree 3, degree 2, degree 1 or degree 0" what do they mean?

Add the terms of degree 3
30x+x=31x *How did we get 30x?

Add the terms of degree 2
-527x-14x=-541x *How did we get -527x?

Add the terms of degree 1 *How did we get 2082x?

Add the terms of degree 0 *How did we get 6055?

The combined terms are 31x,-541x,2059x, and 5866.

Therefore, 31x-541x+2059x+5866 million more barrels per day were imported than exported.

Thank you for your help,
