Posted - 12/10/2009 : 15:50:36 Cognitive Tutor is a research-based program that uses group-work in the classroom, as well as a provided software for the students by using many real world problems. The lessons contain some modeling of a concept, evaluating the process, analyzing their thinking, and extending their learning into more challenging problems. Students are asked to do much writing about their thinking. I can see the use of the lessons as more of projects that can enhance and extend their understanding of different math concepts, but the program does not have much in the way of explanation with the initial skills needed to accomplish them. For instance, they don’t show HOW to create an equation from a set of data, or graph, yet that is included in many of the given lessons. I feel that the teacher is responsible to create an extra curriculum that shows the foundation skills in the more “traditional” sense, before the Cognitive Tutor lessons can be achieved.Has anyone else adopted Cognitive Tutor? If so, how would a typical lesson work within your classroom?
