The Band Committee of 100 people wishes to set up a telephone call system. The initial contact person calls three other people, each of whom call three others and so on, until all the people in the Band Committee have been contacted. What is the maximum number of people they need to make the calls.
I got the answer as 27 + 27 +9 + 9
But the answer according to the book is 66.

I also get 40, not 66. I'd be curious to hear the explanation for 66 if you find out.

According to my interpretation the answer should be 40.

1 person calls 3 people(total 4 contacted)
3 people call 9 people (total 13 contacted)
9 people call 27 people (total 40 contacted)
27 people call 60 people (total 100 contacted)

So you need (1+3+9+27 =) 40 people to make phone calls to contact 100 people.
