Comparing Decimals
The student will be able to:
- Identify the symbols used to compare two decimals.
- Apply these symbols to comparing two decimals.
- Recognize the importance of writing one decimal below the other when comparing two decimals.
- Recognize that writing one or more zeros to the right of the last digit of a decimal does not change its value.
- Describe the procedure for comparing two decimals.
- Apply the procedure for comparing two decimals to solve problems.
Ordering Decimals
The student will be able to:
- Describe the procedure for ordering three or more decimals.
- Order three or more decimals from least to greatest.
- Recognize the need to compare decimals two at a time when ordering three or more decimals.
- Apply the procedure for ordering three or more decimals to solve routine and non-routine problems.
Estimating Decimal Sums
The student will be able to:
- Define estimate, overestimate and underestimate.
- Describe the front-end and rounding strategies for estimating decimal sums.
- Apply the front-end and rounding strategies for estimating decimal sums.
- Recognize that different strategies result in different estimates.
- Evaluate an estimate to determine if it is an overestimate or an underestimate.

Adding Decimals

- Recognize that estimates may vary for the same problem.
- Apply strategies for estimating decimal differences to solve problems.
Subtracting Decimals
The student will be able to:
- Describe the procedure for subtracting decimals.
- Subtract decimals by applying the decimal subtraction procedure.
- Subtract dollar amounts by applying the decimal subtraction procedure.
- Recognize that mistakes can be made when the procedure is not followed.
- Apply decimal subtraction procedures to solve problems.
Solving Decimal Word Problems
The student will be able to:
- Analyze word problems to identify the skills needed to solve them.
- Apply the following concepts in order to solve word problems:
- Reading and writing decimals
- Comparing and ordering decimals
- Estimating decimal sums
- Adding decimals
- Estimating decimal differences
- Subtracting decimals
- Apply all procedures learned in this unit to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of decimals.
